Starting an Cichlid Tank

I'm somewhat familiar w/ what has to be done in maintaining and keeping an african tank, but am wondering if it's safe to keep Baby Oscars w smaller africans?

Most likely, no. Oscar's orginate from South America, and combining SA and African Cics is not a good idea, unless the Africans are Peaceful, such as Kribs.

Even though they are babies, both the Oscars and Africans can be terrors. Lake Malawi, Tangianyika, or Victoria should all be specie-only tanks, if not with some plecos at the most.

I would say no as well. For 1, Oscars can get 15", while African cichlids get 4-5". I would think the African cichlids would be eaten after the Oscar gets bigger than them. You need to have an equally sized fish and aggression, as an Oscar, which sometimes doesn't work either. Oscars are South American cichlids, so they can be unpredictable. Also African Cichlids should only be kept with other African cichlids. Some good tank mates for Oscars are, other Oscars, Green Terrors, Jack Dempseys, fish with decent size and aggression.

When I was in school, back in the day when we walked ten miles, barefoot in the dead of winter, 4"<12". That being said, NO OSCARS.

Odds are they wouldn't get along. But never tell me the odds. Half the fun of having fish is dealing
with the everyday life and death drama. Otherwise it would be boring. I would add them to your
tank and keep us updated with a daily log. If nothing happens, then we have some crow to eat.

I still wouldn't because for one, I believe with Africans you need to add special salt to the tank, and that salt might not be good for the oscar. I'd just keep the oscar out and just get African cichlids, you really shouldn't mix those fish.
