Firstly cichlids are semi obligatory shoaling fish which means that the group structure, although not as highly developed as with the barbus group, is still there and they seem intolerant of "stray fish". I'm the wild a stray fish is often attacked and killed. But in an enclosed environment it seems the behaviour is reversed and they assimilate a stray. The Discus will be happier with more angels in the tank because they can't discern between themselves, Discus, and angels, so as far as they are concerned it's simply that the family shoal has just got bigger. Second this occurs with cichlids because to be truly happy they need "dither" fish... The theory is that they watch the dither fish for signs of danger and can then react earlier to signs of a thread, thus giving them confidence. Posted via Mobile Device |
