Restocking my fifty five gallon fish tank

I have a few fish in it but it is rather empty, I was wondering, are cichlids ok to be kept with swordtails, platies, guppies, and mollies?

No, cichlids require very different water parameters than the above mentioned fish and not to mention most cichlids are either going to be too aggressive or not a good match for the aquascape you likely keep those fish in.

By "cichlid" we are likely assuming African rift lake cichlids, and as Andrew said these are not fish that should be combined with non-rift lakes (aside from a few substrate fish).

But if you have a 55g with livebearers, there are a few Central American and South American cichlids that might work. Check the profiles under cichlids. You will want relative smallish species, and note the compatibility remarks for each.

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]
