Listen to Agent13, she knows what shes talking about! (sorry if ur a guy, I'm judging based on ur avatar). Yeah sand is good. If u want to make ur water hard naturally, without kits, then 100% coral sand is great, I find the Pisces Coral Sand Micro is really good and comes pre cleaned, which saves a lot of time and hassle, believe me!

I'm extremely offended you think I'm a girl .. I'm just a very girly looking boy .. Just kidding lol. I'm female

Yes.. A lot of freshwater "no-no's" are fine in rift lake tanks . Like using marine sand, ocean shells, even can use a bit of marine salt! These lakes are freshwater oceans .. Actually are some of the highest salt content freshwater lakes (that support life) in the world .

g"day agent13...i tested my water and my ph level is fine but my nitrate was bad (almost red on colour chart eekk!) so im going to do just 20% water changes daily for a week and adding some tap safe solution every other and in the meantime il just research what fish to have..may just get a shoaling group for now then go from there...could i mix small pea gravel with some sand substrate?
