Oscar tank size?

i have a 20 gallon tank with a 4in brown ghost knife which just hides in a pvc pipe all day. i want to put a 2.5in oscar in the tank. how long can the oscar live in the tank before it is too large and will require a larger tank?

also i have a 55 gallon tank with 3 clown loaches, 2 silver dollars, 2 platys, 2 pictus catfishes, 1 striped rafael catfish, 1 molly, and 1 dwarf gurami all under 4in. would i be able to put the oscar in that tank when it becomes too large for the 20 gallon?

You will eventually need a bigger tank for the Knife as well. The Oscar should be ok for a few months in the 20G, as long as you are good at waterchanges. When it hits around 4", you can put him and possibly the Knife in the 55G. Both will eventualyl need at least a 75G+ tank with great filtration, however.

Actually, I think the 55g is a good permanent home for the knife. Ghost knives can top out at 16-20", but African knives only get to be 6 or so inches (8" max). But yes, the oscar will eventually need a 75g or bigger.

An Oscar will outgrow a 20 gallon tank in about 3-6 months, depending on what their fed. Oscars are extremely fast growing fish.

Take pride in what you do, for it is a reflection of who you are.
