oscar question

i have a red oscar in a 30 gal tank...how big should he get before he needs a bigger tank?

Welcome to FFC.

The oscar must be moved to a bigger tank as soon as possible. They need very efficient filtration system owing to their monstrous appetite. The bigger the space, the better the chances to allow it to grow. Do plenty of water changes as well.
