Ninja Cichlid?

I made an impulse purchase today. Has anyone heard of a "Ninja Cichlid?" He is white with black vertical bars. I can't recall the latin name but he has my tank all excited. I have malawi's and told the fish store person that I wanted to stay in that family. Have I made a mistake?:(. He is about 1.5" bigger than my other fish. Sorry I can't get a pix up. I am worried that he is not malawi. Can anyone help? Dee

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any malawis that are white with black barring...are they split evenly? You know, so that you can't really tell if its white with black bars or black with white bars? Do they go solid from head to tail, or fade off towards the tail? Does it have a typical mbuna shape (more long and cylinder), hap/peacock shape, or does it seem different? (say...more bulky?)

Found Him!

Thank you for that link Joe. This guess it is more black with white stripes. It is a butticofuri cichlid and that is a tang. My bad. Guess I will see how that do and play it by ear. They seem to have settled down. I know that my mumba are going to like slightly different water PH right? Should I trade him in? He is so cool looking. My hubby named him Big John. Dee

Butti was actually my guess, which is why I was asking more questions. Threw me off because you said white and black...buttis are what I would consider yellow and black.

Buttis are not Tanganyika. They're an African river cichlid...I'd post you a reliable link, but apparently I'm not allowed to post links to "competitive" sites ;) Basically, they're extremely aggressive, very large, and need about a 75 or 90gal entirely to themselves as adults.

Oh Boy, Well maybe I will learn.... I will see if I can trade him. It is so hard for a newbie because the stores can be really misleading. Thank God for Fish Forum!. They seem to be getting along okay right now but I wouldn't want his growth stunted by being in a 55g right now. Hopefully they will take him back....Dee

Yeah, its unfortunate that most stores are only interested in making a profit, not providing good information. Thankfully as you said, there are a lot of good sources on the internet :) Taking him back is definitely best for him and your current fish in the long run!
