Yeah, it doesn't look too happy...fins are clamped and color is kind of washed out. Are there any hiding spots in the tank such as caves or bogwood? What other fish are in with it?

weird, he looks stressed, could be he is alone or that it has no hiding spots.
i read around and it says they arent community fish but can be keep with other chiclids, so you could try that.
also, just a wild thought, could it be water hardness? it needs soft water..

well hes swimming a lil now theres no other fish in the tank with him theres a lil cave i guess its a rock leaning on another there like a passage he can hide or swim through. how can i check the hardness of the water? he has the api master test kit all the water readings are good.

Normally is called like that. Water hardness or dissoled minerals in the water.
It has little to do with pH (some relationship exists thou) and no relationship with
Ammonia, nitrites, or nitrates. I dont have that kit but i know fish in water parameters of hardness not for them can really stressed them. He could get use to it, but its hard to predict.
That fish, with the reserch i did needs a hardness of 12-15 which is relativatly soft and low.
The water temp is fine, it could go until 80F. But watchout if the room has temp fluctuations so it doesnt rise above 80f. Also water current may help, if it doesnt. But the 1st i would tackle and check is the hardness. Believe me, fish can get stressed easily. I normally buy fish that are able to cope to a wide range of parameters. Hope i helped a bit, sry i have nvr posted in this forum, but ive had fishtank expirience for years. Although other members can help me out, verifiying me.. :)

They're from Central America so not really what I would call a soft water fish but more moderately hard. They do well in a PH range from 7.0 to 8.0 and hardness from 4-20dH. He could just need a little bit of time to adjust and feel comfortable in his new surroundings. A beautiful fish when they are colored up.

ya he seems to be adapting i guess, we made hiim a lil rock cave he hangs out then swims a lil. but he eats cichlid pellets with no prob i think he might need another cichlidin the tank? or just give him time to get use to the tank...do they sell water hardness testers? or can he live in 2-40
