so i got a new salvini cichlid and he's in a 10 quarentine tank for now. i have a peice of drift wood and a rock cave in the aquarium and he spends all day hiding(some times floating sideways or at other strange angles) i can't get him to eat anything at all. i even stuck a live earthworm right in his face and he didn't budge!

my first hypothesis was poor handling. i ordered him from a petshop that didn't really seem to know what they were doing. when i went to pick him up that day(around 3:30 PM) i found him still in the shipping bag. (with no calm down chemicals) but now its been 6 days and he's still not even eating.

anybody have any ideas?

wow. Ok explain your tank a bit more. Whats the temp at amonia nitrates nitrites Ph ect. What do you mean in a bag for awhile? How long was the fish in the bag? What do you mean you had them order it? What size of fish is he? You should not of got the fish that day. Rather wait a week so that way you would of known if the fish was healthey. And the pet store would be dealing with the sick boy. Sorry it may sound harsh. Not intending it to. With that said. Now it time to get him ready to be healthy again. If you could go to a walmart and get some stress coat an put in the tank or stress zyme. Do small water changes daily like one gallon. With out disturbing the substrait. Then just add a little flak food for him a few times aday. I mean small amounts. follow up with what hapens. and if you have any more questions just ask. Best of luck. Mollies

he was in the bag for 5 hours at the store plus whatever amount of time since he was shipped. i couldn't leave him at the store though because he was special ordered so they only had one and i think they would have sold him the next day if i hadn't come to get him.

thats good to know about water changes but why flake food? i feel like it would be just as hard for him to see right?

Well you would be giveing him small amounts and small peaces so that way it wouldnt bloat him to fast. And he can slowly get to eating again. Could you take a pic of him. and post it? How is he doing today?

i'm actually leaning toward a she but i'll try to get some pics up. she's still hiding all day floating sideways under a rock. (i think she's floating sideways because then shes pressing her side up against the side) last night i put some pellets in and i couldn't find them in the tank this morning so i'm hoping that she ate them. over all she's doin better but not perfect yet.
i think if i can get her to eat some i might put a younger convict in there to make her feel more comfortable.
