New Convict Family? Help!

Okay. So I ask for two male convicts and the guy at the pet store was confident that is what I got. The two fish could not have disliked each other more, until now. I think they are making a nest. I have heard that these fish will kill a tankful of fish when breeding. I know that I need to get rid of them and am looking for a new home. How long do I have until they start laying eggs once they start this nesting behavior? It is really interesting to watch them but I don't want them to kill my other fish! If I were to get a "breed tank" how big does it need to be for them? Can't sink in a lot of money. What should I do? Dee

ok I would buy 20 or 30 gallon tank (a no name brand) dont need gravel. So u need filter (sponge filter)and a heater. put 30% of main tank water into the breeding tank and and keep the sponge filter in the main tank for about 5-7 days.

Distinguishing sexes of convicts is easy. Females have orange spot on their bellies whereas males don't.
IMO, there's no need for heater. Sponge filter is sufficient.

Convicts

I definately have a male and a female then. Good to hear I don't need a heater. I live in Michigan and its starting to get colder. Should be okay? Once the convicts eggs hatch do I need to remove fry? Would the eggs be easy to see? They have a nest that is all covered so I imagine that is where they are. What about feeding? How long until they hatch generally? Sorry I was not planning parenthood so soon! Dee

Convict Update!

Well I found a store that would take my pair of Convicts. Thankfully I don't have to worry about that anymore. I didn't see any eggs in their nest yet either. Thank you to everyone for your help. My fish seem a lot happier. Much more peaceful! Dee :D
