Try dwarf rams. Not many SA cichlids can fit in a 36g once fully grown. or a fire mouth, they are central american, but very pretty and max out at 6inches, and are very peaceful compared to their brethren, but males will display to each other, and they can be territorial at times. You could try convicts. Just be careful not to get a male and female they breed faster than rabbits! A fire mouth with a couple of pictus or a school of cories with some smaller schooling dithers would make a nice tank.
