new albino oscar

first off, im new to this forum. I have had oscar's before but due to moving around with college. I just sold them back to the fish store. Now I have a albino oscar that is about 1.5 to 2 inches long and he is panting kind of alot. I do have a air stone in the tank and it puts out LOTS of air. Im going to have the water tested today because my tank is not completely cycled. Any ideas what it could be? He eats just fine and is usually is active. Still is a little shy.

Water changes are the first place to start. Since he is a big waste procuer and the tank is still cycling I would say at least 30% every other day until the tank is fully cycled.

Also--you do have a filter in the tank, right? I assume you do. Defintely do water changes because the tank is still cycling. I too have an albino oscar and I really like him. Keep in mind they need at least a 55 gallon tank. Good luck and let us know how he is doing

breathing hard huh? that is a sign of high ammonia, you shouldnt have added the oscar until the tank was fully cycled, zebra danios are a much better option for the cycle.

You shouldn't even add fish for a cycle.

the only problem i have with that is their is only enough bacteria to support the waste being produce if their is nothing in their, then not much bacteria is being produced.

though their are better ways to cycle a tank, such as adding a bit of strait ammonia, just a bit. then waiting until the spikes are done.

i completely agree with you though, the fishless way of cycling is much better.
