I had my doubts so I wanted your opinions. After taking this pic I have to say male for sure.
When I first got the GBR it seemed to have a pink belly, and the body structure looked more female like.

Definitely a male, sometimes they can have pinkish bellies for a time but it eventually goes away. I'm no expert on it but this has just been my experience.

He was also small when i got him and a little shy, now he has grown a bit his colors show more and I didn't notice how long his Ventral fins are, that should of been the dead giveaway. Anyway i got him because i thought maybe female, but regardless he was the only healthy looking gbr in the tank. Looks like I might have to find a female now.

Hi Ianwp! Your GBR is definitely male. Sometimes males can have a pink belly as well but as Lil said they tend to outgrow it. Males are bigger, their dorsal fin spikes at the front are much longer than a females. The end of the dorsal fin will also be longer and more spiked at the back where as the females have a rounded end to the dorsal. The ventrals for a male will be much longer with the spiked tip as well. The main black spots on the body will never usually have any of the blue iridescence on it for males either.

Also its very hard to get a bonded pair by purchasing one male and another female since they usually like to pick their mate out of a group.

By all means I am no expert. Yet. :) I hope to be soon though!

Here is a circled picture of my female so you can spot the differences.
