I am wanting to purchase some live plants for my three 10 gallon tanks. Each tank has a Convict in it. I have read that they eat plants in the wild. So, is there a plant that would be good for the tanks that they can munch on and not kill it. and if so, what do I need if I put in a live plant.I have no knowledge of live plants and how to care for them yet.
I've got some java fern that's over 12" tall. No special lighting is used, just plain old flourescents. No fertilizer or special substrate is used. I found out recently that apparently you're not supposed to plant this stuff in the gravel and instead should attach it to driftwood or rocks to let it anchor on, but I had the bigger plant stuck right in the aquarium gravel. It sort of anchored itself to the gravel so it doesn't move around. It has grown pretty well (although it's a fairly slow-growing plant) in these conditions.
I've heard from other sources that even the most die-hard vegetarian fish don't really like java fern and will leave it alone. Definitely one of my favorite aquarium plants.
