I recommend lights during the day. Like any living creature, they deserve and benefit from a proper night and day cycle. What I do is lights on at 10 in the morning and lights out at 10 at night. If your tank is planted, a light cycle will also benefit the plants. 10-12 hours of daylight is the norm.

ditto. 10-012 hours a day is good for all fish to keep them in a normal cycle. i also turn on the lights in the room for a half an hour prior to turning on their lights (to simulate sunrise) and then the reverse at night, to make a "sunset".

My boyfriend couldn't care less about fish- but he's a total computer geek. Since his computer is in the same room as my large tank, he wants to design a program that will simulate sun & moon rise as it would throughout the year outside. The different timing throughout the year, the moon when it is full, half, etc, and different lengths of daylight depending on the year (not to mention dimming and such). If he gets it going I will definitely be sharing the program for free.
