Lake Victoria Cichlid questions

Hello everyone!

I was thinking about starting up a new aquarium some time in the future. I really want to do a Cichlid Tank and have Lake Victorian Cichilds in it. I really want to stick with just one species of fish (Just because I think it would be easier and I wouldn't have an issue of cross breeding). My favorite fish so far is the Pundamilia nyererei Makobe Island, I just love the colors. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

Stuff like:

The best tank size
The best number of fish I could keep and the ratio of males to females
The best equipment I need (Filter, lighting, etc.)
Plants and other things I can put in there
Or maybe there's another breed of fish you would recommend

Im open to anything really. I need all the help I can get and even though I am doing my research (and it will be awhile before I even get this started) its nice to take advice from people who might have first hand experience.

Before we get into the questions you asked.

What is available locally to you and would you be willing to order online?
Do you have a tank already?

Im willing to order offline and no I do not. I wont be setting anything up for awhile. I just want to get all my information before I start buying anything

It depends on what is available locally. Some of the Lake Victoria cichlids require tanks in excess of 125g, and most are aggressive to each other. Pundamila require tanks of about 55g minimum, 75g being better.

Pundamilla is a good choice and yes has great color.

Before we offer anymore suggestions, find out what is available locally in your local stores and whether they can order fish for you.

And for me I live in a small town in Alabama. The closest large city where I could probably kinda a good quality store is about 2 to 3 hours away. So there is kind of an issue finding a place I can trust and know that the fish are in good quality

i would take a look at aquabid.com alot of great fish on there and of course you have your ones to avoid (sellers i mean) look for a DOA gurantee/policy and how they are going to ship etc etc lake vic cichlids are so pretty but expensive for a fish. africans are pretty looking guys, look inot electric blue johnannis and yellow labs. (some of the more popular africans)
