I have a 110g tank that has 2 full grown blue gourami and a juvie (4.5") jack dempsey. please no lectures, the dempsey doesnt harass the gouramis much. but im curious if I could add anything else that wouldnt harass the gouramis (who keep to themselves completely) and wouldnt kill, or be killed, by the dempsey. any ideas?

Perhaps a larger species of Synodontis such as Multipunctatus,or Pleco. Silver dollars might work but not sure how they would view the Gouramis. FiremouthCichlid might also work. Do keep in mind that at some point, usually within a year, the dempsey will be large enough to view the gouramis as prey.

Im hoping the gouramis will die of old age before then LOL they are HUGE though. anyway, Maybe ill grab both a large cat and a firemouth. id be afraid to add a second firemouth so maybe just one and a cat. Ive never had a multipunctatus, though my buddy has a eupterus thats a total jerk. maybe Ill try the multi.

single firemouth (which ive always wanted anywhoo) and a multi or pleco. now im excited.

Have found that like most catfish, The Multipunctatus do better with at least three specimens. I have three in an 80 gal with an Electric Blue dempsey. Kept one with the dempsey for a while but decided to add two more and they are comical. They grow to around six inches and very much like lots of rock to hide in. If you were to get the catfishes, then the pleco might not be needed for the catfish do a fairly good job of cleaning up scraps of food and the pleco would no doubt create a fair amount of waste that may not be needed? I would go for either the catfish or the pleco for that reason but perhaps not both.
I agree ,one f iremouth would prolly be the best bet. As the gouramis pass on, then other options would open up for tankmates for the Jack dempsey in my view.

lol you know i actually missed your last post there till just now. i was having a night mare of a time with water quality again, turns out with a juvie firemouth and juvie dempsey, the gravel was littered big time with all kinds of fish poo. ive never seen anything like it, and ive had 4 severums in there! lol added another filter (now 2 big tetra double HOBs and an ehiem ecco 2236) and things are steadily improving. now if we could just keep the firemouth alive....
