importance of lighting for fish

Hi everyone,

I have a colony of 6 cichlids (2 oscars, 1 texas, 4 african) in my 200g tank. I am wondering whether lighting is essential for fish growth.

Does lighting affect fish growth at all?

Not growth, but cosmetically it can affect a fish. If you choose the right lighting, different kind of bulbs, you can manipulate their colors slightly.

Lighting can have effects on the behaviors of fishes. Deep water cichlids like frontosas will be less comfortable in a brightly lit aquarium potentially causing the fish to remain in hiding. Reflectivity of the substrate can also have similar implications. Moon lighting can stimulate mating in some species. So the answer is, yes. Lighting can have positive or adverse effects on the health of your fish, subsequently affecting the growth and/or life of your fish. This is generally not the case though as most fish adapt well to a broad spectrum of lighting.

Lighting is not nearly as consequential in FW as it is in planted, and reef aquaria.
