I lost three angles

so i got home from work last night and i lost three of my angles in my 55g all the water test came back fine besides the ammonia was hie .i added a piece of new driftwood the day before that a friend had given me,i put it in the tank without asking him were it came from ive now taken the wood out because im afraid it might have been contaminated.ive done a massive water change dose any one else no what to do to prevent further problems.

i know the drift wood was a mistake i was in a rush.

No idea, other than water changes. Surely someone will know. Good luck anyhow.

The ammonia was high? That could have caused the deaths, for sure. Boil your driftwood well before putting it back in the tank. Had it been treated with pesticides (why would any one do that) it could have caused it. Just ideas I'm tossing out there...

thank you i thought it was that wood to i just was lazy and soaked it for a day and threw it in the now i have this problem.i never would have done this in my other tank but i was rushing things in my 55g

Of course you'd never do that with your other tank. Not with the fish you have in it. $$$$
How high was your ammonia??

on the cheap color strips in thee green danger zone after wood removed and water change safe zone.in the big tank i use store bout africa hardwood only.
