From what I've seen as long as the tank-mates that you get aren't small enough to fit in his mouth and don't infringe on his territory you won't have too many issues. However, maybe some clown loaches and the pleco for the bottom could be cool.

A Raphael catfish would be another possibility for a bottom feeder tank mate. Although they are shy and hide a lot mine would come out every feeding time and do a couple laps around the tank hoovering up every morsel from the bottom. He did a great clean up job! They grow to about 6" so not too small to be eaten and they don't poop as much as plecos do.

Unfortunately some breeders give Oscar fry hormones that cause them to prematurely show adult colors, it's not really good for them as one might expect.

I bought my present Oscar as a baby and made sure to select one with the premature color patterns, which are nice enough on their own.
