As far as petco/petsmart goes, the only time I buy there is when they have something on sale for really cheap like $.99 plants or if they happen to get a fish in that nowhere else has. Even then I am very leery because of how the fish are kept. I do occasionally enjoy asking them a question and watching them make up an answer though.

Do be careful, just because its a mom and pop store doesnt mean that A: They know what they are talking about and B: they wont try pulling the wool over your eyes if they think they can get away with it. I have found numerous stores over the years where I have played dumb and heard all kinds of whacked out things. My friend was a newb in saltwater aquariums an a local store knew this and took advantage of her by selling her a rock with a bunch of fast growing anemonies<cough cough> aiptasia lol. Once they know you and know you have a clue they tend to be more on the up and up.

This is why I always suggest making yourself visible at the LFS. I go in at least once a week, sometimes twice. This seems ridiculous to some, but when I go in they always ask me about my tanks, how the last thing I bought is working and what I am looking for this week. It also pays off because you tend to get deals just because they know you are coming back. Just yesterday I got a dense baseball size chunk of java moss, about 5 times the amount they sell normally, for like $6. This has happened a few times just because they know I spend my aquarium $ there.

Edit: BTW bluetangclan is now my favorite username on the board.

Ohh the good ole fish store...sigh...

tbh..I still do not know much about fish but boy oh boy did they see me coming!!!..started out as 3 guppies in a tiny tank for my daughter...then into a two foot 70L full of Mollies/Platties....each tank = DEATH!!

Not at any stage of the tanks was I told about cycling, pH, anything at all...Then one of my platties got cotton mouth and I was told that a fish with a white mouth would look 'cute'...urmmmm....nothing about diseases or anything....I had a tank full of dead fish within three days..apparently this was just 'unlucky'.

So I started to google and learnt what cotton mouth was plus other things...and decided to put african cichlids in my tanks (70L)...so I went to the store, still not realising that they were idiots and asked how many cichlids I could put in my 2ft tank and I was told about 8...so I just got 8 fish...which cost around 300 dollars only to have them kill each other all within a week...

all up..id say that shop has about 1000 dollars of my money....and that was within 3 months. Never again.
