There is no physical difference between male and female Oscars, I forget the the word for it but you can only tell by taking them out of the tank and checking the sex yourself, which most people would do unless you're a professional.

Yes, it's called venting. I think you meant to say most people would NOT do as it is very stressful for the fish.
