How Many Convicts?

Hello
New to the forum, just have a quick question.
How many Convict fish should go in a 40 gallon tank? I've just got the tank, set it up and it's been running several days.
A friend has a 55 gallon tank with far too many Convicts in it - she wants to give me some but I don't know how many should go in the tank and still be healthy.
She offered a breeding pair but I don't really think I want to breed them. She can give me just males or just females. Which is better?
Thanks for any help!

If you have the same sex they will fight. I would take the breeding pair. Just because they are breeeding doens't mean you need to make sure the fry survive. The tank is probably still cycling so ask your friend for a sponge from her filter. The breeding pair will be less likely to be aggressive towards each other. I would put more then for convicts with the breeding pair and maybe less. If not the breeding pair maybe six.

38 gallon :
Pelvicachromis Taeniatus Nigerian Red not yet breeding pair
4 Pangio Kuhli
12 Hemmigrammus Bleheri
2 Botia Lohachata
1 Botia Straita
1 Ancistrus Sp.
6 Poecilia Reticulata

The Wet Spot Portland Oregon!!!!!!

ADA: Do!aqua Iwagumi 10 gallon size!
7 Clown Killies
7 Ghost shrimp

I've kept girls only with other girls, and boys only with other boys with great success. However, same sex doesn't necessarily guarantee you won't get any breeding pairs... I actually have a breeding pair of lesbian convicts, lol. The eggs obviously aren't hatching, but they're sure trying. The lesbian pair is in a 20 gallon, and I have two girls in a 75 gallon, and two boys in a 55 gallon. I would say you could probably get away with 4-6 in a 40 gallon, but 6 is likely pushing it.
