Help with water issue!

Hi
New to the forum so I don't know if this belongs here!
This is an image I found on the internet of the fish we have. Three all together The Fish!!

1) Is it possible to tell the sex of these fish. Two are now quite large and have fought over territory and moved the stones around in the tank. The other is small and tries to avoid all trouble

2) The main point of the post is this. The fish have been growing a lot since we have them. We have them in a 40x30cm tank, which just isn't the size for them now. We need to buy a new one.
Anyway, what we have been doing with the water at present is put bottle spring water in. The tank holds 12x1.5litre bottles = 18 litres of water. We were looking at another tank that was something like 80x45x60cms which is over double the size. However it says it holds 150litres, which doesn't make sense, but this is not the point.
The point is, the bottle water is getting expensive. Changing once every month, or less.

So, is there a way to ween them off bottled water and onto tap water, and is there something that can be done to the tap water to make less 'toxic' (with the cleaning agents they add to water [I live in Greece]).

Thanks in advance for the advice

Yours

Rob

Welcome to the forum!

Those are blood parrots. They are a hybrid cichlid common in the hobby. To find their sex you must vent them Here is a pic of what to look for.

Female is on the left, male on the right.

Flip them upside down to do it but don't keep them like that too long and don't do it too often for it is stressful for the fish. Your current tank is waay to small for those fish if my calculations are correct. Your new tank is ok for those fish. They will top out at around 6-8". The two fish may be pairing off. That spells doom for the third wheel especially in such a small tank I would remove him. Since blood parrot males are sterile you will never get fry. I would also look into something in the 200L range as that would suit better for them

As for your tap water dilemma, just add a product called seachem prime to your water right before you refill the tank. It should get rid of anything nasty in your tap. Also I would up your water change schedule to every or every other week of about 50%.
