the perfect setup for electric yellow cichlids. I have made up my mind that my next tank will be for these beautiful fish. I would like to know what would be the ideal set up for these guys the tank will be 55-65 gallons I will need something to raise my ph so I was thinking maybe a dark colored substrate that will do that. Then of course rocks to make caves and such so I need to know what kind of rocks to use. Also what other cichlids could I put in with them and how many of each would be good.
Would red zebra, cobalt blue, and electric yellow work together? Also would adding some crushed coral to the substrate work to raise the ph from 7.2 to the around 8 they prefer? Come on guys give me some help here please.
yes, crushed coral works great for raising the ph. Limestone rocks buffers the ph too. Those fish would work together just fine, sounds like a good combo.
I don't recommend messing with your ph cause it changes back on you all by itself, which will stress and or kill your fish but I was given this link regarding rock and how it affects water parameters. Enjoy the read. Rocks For Aquariums
Great information.
I would never use chemicals in my tank for the same reason mentioned but I do plan on the crushed coral in the filter and then the guy at the LFS was telling me today that there is some other rock that he will have in next week that can be used to decorate as well as help the ph he told me the name but I have forgotten what it was. I am looking forward to hopefully setting this up as I have discovered with my blue rams that ciclids have alot more personality than my other fish.
I plan on taking one of the filters from my 55 and putting it on the new tank to get the bacteria a jump start then I think I will add electric yellows first as I have read they are the most hearty but then I am not sure if I should do the reds or blues next? What would you suggest?
I use both crushed coral and limestone rock in my cichlid tank to keep my pH up. But I think adding the Yellow Labs first is a good idea. I don't know if you have your heart set on those fish but I would also recommend looking at acei. They are just as peaceful as the Yellow Labs and They make good mates.
The only one I really have my heart set on are the yellows I have wanted some for a really long time but did not have an extra tank to set up for them. I took a look at the one you suggest and it is very pretty I will do it instead of the cobalt. Thank you for all your help.
Nope still researching it. I like darker colors so the fish color show up really well. I was talking to Dave (the owner at the good LFS) today and he said they are going to be getting a shipment in next week of a rock that he recommends for cichlid caves its a dark colored rock and he told me the name but now I have no idea what he said it was called. LOL He also said we may be able to work out something were I can come in and work a couple hours a few days a week and they will pay me in fish stuff which I think is great!
That would be awesome!!! I wish my LFS would do that!
But when you remember the name of the rock post it because I am really curious to know what it is now.
calm sorry i missed this one.. yes crushed will work and if you mix arragonite it will help also ..... the rock may be the ones listed or tulfa and they all help ....
also labs are great and cobalts look nice too to bad yout so far away i have a breeder near by that has cobalts cheap!!! so far sounds like you have a good plan but (cus i am slow and dont recall if you said it)
what is your filtration? with mbuna its always good to over stock and double to tripple filtration is always great!!.....
Hey Bear do you know if he ships? At the LFS here there are $12.00 a piece so it maybe worth it to pay the shipping. I can get them at petsmart for $5.00 but I prefer not to buy fish there but I may since there is such a big difference in the price.
