Help! Fish's mouth stuck open.

One of my yellow labs is a greedy little fish. So, he ate a root from one of the plants that they dug up and now it looks like he has tried to eat it and it's lodged in his mouth. I can kinda see some of it sticking out, kind of... and his mouth is open. What do I do? I don't want him to die. Is there really anything to do? I've attached a picture of what he/she looks like.

Update!

Ok so after reading up about people just trying to pull out whatever is stuck, we decided to try it with a pair of tweezers and my husband pulled out... wait for this...

A waterbug leg. I guess a waterbug got in the tank and lost a leg and my poor fishie thought it was food and it just got stuck in his mouth. Hopefully he lives through the night.
