If you plan to keep the corys and plants in this tank I would strongly suggest staying away from african cichlids all together. African cichlids would eat your corys and plants.
If you're looking for options that will work in a planted 55 with corys, here are some options for you:
Live bearers (mollys, swordtails, platy)
some of the rainbow fishes
Keep in mind that not all of these fish will mix, but there are a lot of options for a tank like that.
Things to stay away from in a 55:
silver dollars (also wouldl leat the plants)
other catfish (would eat the corys)
and anything else that gets over 4 inches in length or is aggressive and/or vegetarian
The important thing to remember when stocking a 55 is to realize that it is a very narrow tank, thus large fish have a difficult time being able to turn around once they get above 4 - 5 inches. The larger the fish the more waste and fewer fish, and 55 gallons is really not a lot of space for large waste producers. There are a few species of barbs that will chew on certain plants, but others, like odessa barbs, cherry barbs, gold barbs (great hair algae eaters) who don't bother plants and are awesome for color (they also wouldn't bother corys)
