Swainy,
I have a 30 gallon African tank and I can tell you from experience, the shrimp are goners! Ghost shrimp would be called "dinner" to these little nippers. I added a $25.00 1.5 inch blue lobster to the tank about 2 mos. ago and it lasted for about a week. As soon as it molted (thus becoming soft), they ripped him apart.
I have a nice 3 inch female Frontosa, a 4.5 inch male Cobalt Blue, a 3.5 inch male Orange Peacock, a 2.5 inch female, 1 inch female juvenile and 3 inch male Electric Yellow and a 3.5 inch Johanni in this tank with a 5.5 inch Big Cat. That along with a fry net with about 17 little yellows. The poor lobster didn't have a chance.
If you want to try some inverts...I'd suggest a good old, All-American Crawdad (Crayfish) from your local area (if you have them in your local area). I'd get a big one too (2.5-3.5 inch or bigger) so he can defend himself. Don't forget to get him a good couple of rocks to hide under. If you can get them near home, they're usually for free right out of the creek or swamp.
Cichlids are beautiful, freshwater fish but they are flat out mean.
