What about one Angelfish with others? I know it's not the norm. In the past we had a tropical community tank with an Angelfish and it worked out well.
It worked out for me. But i would still only recommend a pair for the 36g, then a group of maybe 5-6 corydoras for cleanup, a small species pleco, and then maybe some cardinal tetras or even a pair of rams would look fantastic.
I would definitely lean towards a planted tank also. Also, I actually have a pair of angels I'm selling and lots of young 2 month old fry as well if you are interested
