Nothing a cichlid does with substrate is out of the realm of possibility.

Possibly it's looking for a surface on which to spawn, but I don't know if your fish is large enough to be sexually mature, or if there are other frontosas in the tank.

Typically, Rift lake cichlids are less substrate-oriented than Central Americans, but captive fish do all sorts of wacky things they may not do in nature. And some Rift lake fish do build mounds in preparation for spawning as opposed to digging a hole in which to spawn or to tend fry.

I would say this is evidence of emerging sexual maturity.

thousands have lived without love; not one without water.

Nothing to be worried about unless they start compromising the rock structure if you have one.

Many Rift lake cichlids will dig as the bottom of Lake Malawi is naturally sand and rocks.

Keep an eye on the Frontosa with Labs, the larger Frontosa can sometimes go after the labs when fully mature. Also the yellow labs are a lot more active than the relatively timid Frontosa and can sometimes get stressed.

10g Fry / Hospital / QT tank (as needed)

75g Saltwater Reef, Ocellaris Clownfish, Lyretail Antias (baby), Lemon damsel, Longtail Fairy Wrasse, purple dottyback, snails, crabs and a few LPS corals.

220g Still sitting empty (come on Lottery I need the numbers to come up!)
