Firemouth tank mates

I currently have a 29 gallon tank with a firemouth, opaline gourami and 6 cory cats. Iwant to redo his tank mates though and was wondering what would be an ideal tank mate for him in a 29 gallon? preferably something that likes to swim around and is at least mildly flashy though i know its not a very big tank. He just likes to hide if there is a human being in the room he is in.

Tank is over filtered with a Marineland penguin 200 biowheel filter.

Tanks looks good. i would look into fast moving schooling fish that will stay out in the open. Tiger barbs, black skirt tetras, platys, mollies, swordtails, are all good.

Thanks for the advice, I've been thinking tiger barbs but they wouldn't mix well with the corys would they? I also heard Giant Danios might be a good option. Either way I'm supposed to call a local fish store back later today and hopefully they will either take the Gourami or the Firemouth off my hands. Either fish will open up possibilities and ill probably end up with a school of tiger barbs. :) Cause even if i keep the Gourami ill turn that into a community tank and the 15 gallon im cycling will be for the barbs.

If i were to go the tetra route which types would you suggest to go in with a 4-5 inch firemouth besides the skirted ones?

I responded to this question in your other thread on much the same issue, but will repeat for consistency here. As noted in our profile, suitable tankmates for Firemouth are medium peaceful barb and larger characins. Substrate fish are usually OK.

I do not consider Tiger Barb peaceful. They have an inherent nipping tendency, and the Firemouth's fins may be very tempting. Not a guarantee they will, but enough of a possible that I would not risk the fish.

I was actually thinking about that earlier today after i had made this post. Those fins would be tempting especially since it is a male with the long flowing tails behind him.

Any specific suggestions as to what i should put in with him would be appreciated, and if need be the school of cory's has a home in a 15 gallon hexagon should the need arise.

Personally I would go with livebearers. They are native to the same region the firemouths come from. And by livebearers I mean mollies and swordtails.

That is a distinct possibility but I have never been a fan of the typical molly/swordtail/platy tanks. Though their fry would provide a treat for the firemouth on a regular basis. At the moment I wish I could have kept the 55 gallon I just got rid of because of lack of room because I'm looking at rosy barbs but i dont think i school of 6 5 inch fish would fit well into a 29 gallon along with my firemouth.

I am also taking a look at glass cats but i don't think they would be hardy enough to manage with a Firemouth would they?

Not in that sized tank. I would look into small characins or barbs like the ones mentioned. And liveberers can be quite interesting. I once had some wild mollies and they were very cool fish. Here is a vid of my old trio.
