You will have to call around to your LFSs in order to find out which of them sells live black worms. Don't bother with Petco, Petsmart, etc. I doubt any of the chain stores sells live black worms and even if they did I'm sure they would be of poor quality.
Black worms are a type of tubifex worm, but NOT a brown tubifex worm. You do NOT want to feed brown tubifex worms as these carry "nasties" that can make your fish sick. I know that feeding the medicine soaked black worms is what healed my fish. I was sure she was a goner, but this morning she looks better than ever.
When you do find a source that sells the live black worms ask them on which day(s) they receive deliveries. My LFS gets them in on Tuesdays and Fridays so those are the days I purchase my worms. You want the freshest worms possible. You store the worms in the frig. I keep mine in a sandwich size plastic container with a lid. I've cut a huge hole in the lid so the worms can "breathe". Once a day I pull the container out of the frig and fill it with water, give the container a few gentle swirls, and after the worms have settled back to the bottom of the container I carefully pour the water out of the container. You want to store the worms with enough water to keep them moist, but not so much that they "drown". About 1/16th" of an inch of water is suffice. I always rinse off the portion of worms that I take from the container before I feed the portion to my fish.
I hope you can find some live black worms in your area. Your fish will recover more quickly by ingesting the meds. Good luck and keep me posted!
