Convicts Ready to Breed??

I was wondering how to tell if convicts are close to breeding/spawning. I have a clay pot in the tank and the male has been in there all day. It seems as if he is picking at the sides. Could he be cleaning the surface for the female to spawn? Also, they sometime faceoff and look as if they are "kissing". Any input is greatly appreciated!!

sounds like a aggression issue, im pretty sure convicts will dig like pits to lay the eggs.

Mine dig the **** out of the tank. I have sand substrate and they create 6+ inch deep craters. These pits aren't to lay the eggs in, but to protect the young when they have hatched.

They will also spend a long time in their chosen home together (plant pot, dug out driftwood etc.).

The females colours will go mental.

They will become very, very, very aggressive to intruders. They attack my hand when cleaning and get very angry if you even approach the tank.

Convicts dont dig pits for eggs...The pair i had always laid their eggs on the roof of the cave........Willie is correct about the color of your female and the aggression of both parents...You might want to get a divider or another tank.........Alot of times the male will want to mate immediately after she drops her eggs and it is usually to stressful for the female to take, sometimes death will occur........Keep the male seperate after the fry are free swimming.......This is how i would handle it at least
