Convict Cichlids - newbie question

Hello - a few weeks ago I got a new 55 tank -

Someone who was tired of their blue convicts offered them to me (yay free fish!). So, now I have a breeding pair with about 20+ babies stuffed into a 15g hospital tank until my 2nd 55 is finished cycling.

I went to the lfs today to ask if there was anything that I could put with them in the tank as I heard cichlids like to be overstocked.... he basically stated no - but suggested that I might put in a larger fish like a Midas....

He also stated that I would have a tank full of them within a few months and that I would not like them. He refuses to even buy them anymore because he had so many people trying to sell him the babies. He really tried to talk me out of keeping them.

He basically said without much experience that I should start with something else...

I have never had cichlids before.... so I know nothing but I feel bad taking the fish to basically give them away.

If I keep them then -
1. should I get something else to keep with them, if so what? (would be willing to even break up the breeding pair)
2. is a 55g tank even big enough?
3. any guidance on substrate, decorations etc?

If I rehome them then -
1. what would be a good cichlid mix to start with? I would love to have a community and fish that I see not ones that only hide and come out either at night or at feedings...

Thanks in advance - I know I need a decision soon as their tank right now is so small... I feel like I'm punishing them.

firemouths, green terrors, synodis catfish, shovelnose catfish, texas cichlid, jewel cichlid, yellow lab cichlid, oscar, jack dempsey. just to name a few

Keep in mind that some of them will out grown a 55gal tank so only purchase if you plan on upgrading in a year or so.
