Barbs could work. they frequent the middle to upper regions of the tank while the convicts, stay closer to the substrate. Do be aware that if a pair of convicts decides to spawn,, all bets are off with regards to tankmates survival. You then become stuck with perhaps hundreds of convict babies that you will have trouble even giving away. I would stick with one convict and things may be more peaceful.

The most important medication in your fish medicine cabinet is.. Clean water.

you could also try a small shoal of Colombian tetras or Buenos Aires Tetras......They grow a little larger than most of your other tetra species and usually can hold thier own against larger fish, but as 1077 stated, if you buy more than one convict, it really limits your choices for tankmates......A breeding pair of convicts will just about destroy any other fish in the tank, even fish larger than them.......Years ago, i had some convicts, who of course bred......I put 4 fry in a 55 with a JD who was about 8 inches....They were put in there for food for the Dempsey, well he ate 2 of them and the other 2 managed to survive......I left them in their, when they reached about 1 1/2 inches they were starting the breeding process themselves.......I was amazed how 2 fish under 2 inches could scare a Dempsey to hide in his cave ALL the time.........They harrassed him constantly and it wasnt worth losing him to these guys.........They were removed and rehomed, just to save the Dempsey.........I wouldnt do more than one convict, unless you have room for more tanks...........

Well, when I used to keep freshwater, I used to keep Firemouths (my favorite freshwater fish) with the convicts, jack dempseys are another choice, all very beautiful fish, but not too many, as they are fairly agressive
