Cichlid Tank

Hi everyone, petco is having $1 gallon sale so I'm getting a 40 gallon tank wide. I'm debating whether to do African or other type of cichlid. Any ideas anyone? I like both.

Can you get a 55 gallon?

in a 40 breeder i would either do a community with a pair of easy going NW cichlids, or an african species tank with a male and some females.

There are a lot of new world cichlids that can be kept with community fish, and a lot of community fish that can be kept with cichlids. As for the african cichlids, I am unsure of whether that's large enough to keep more than a species. I don't know much of anything about them. I'm sure someone else can help with that.

125 - BGK, chanchito cichlid, pictus cats, silver dollars, palmas bichir
125 - cichlids (severums, bolivian rams, chocolate), rainbows ( turquoise, red), loaches (angelicus, zebra, kuhli and horseface), plecos (BN, RL and clown), denison barbs, tiretrack eel, pearl gouramis, betta
90 - Congo tetras, african knife, upside down cats, spotted ctenopoma, kribensis, delhezzi bichir
2.5 - betta

I already got a 40gal. And it's small enough to fit on our dresser. We have a 55gal in the living room, tropical community tank. I'm leaning more toward cichlids, as i already naturally have higher ph water so I won't need to do much with the chemical aspect concerning ph. I'm just not sure what species.

well you have two things factoring which ones you can get. size of tank and ph. start google searching! i like to use Aquarium Fish: Tropical Freshwater Fish and Saltwater Fish for Home Aquariums as a jumping off point and see what you can have an then learn if you can actually keep them.

I've always loved South American cichlids. Only problem is in a 40 gal you'll have to be very careful with compatability issues. So much personality variation in each species its impossible to say what combinations will work. In my experience, fish that are similar will fight more than fish that are very different. For example, jack dempseys and jewelfish have never gotten along for me , but dempseys and severums, or jewels and convicts have been fine.
Main thing is the personality of the individual fish. Some SA cichlids are totaly intolerant of any other tankmates while others of the same species will coexist with anything. I have a large dempsey that is best friends with a small female convict. You just can't tell till you observe them in your tank.
Goodluck with your pets.

Any time you mix cichlids there is the possibility that it will not work out. Some combos are more likely to work than others, though.

Red face Must be Crazy

Some days, even I don't understand what I do.. I just traded 25 angelfish for 25 OB Peacocks(blue marbled).. I don't know anything much how to keep them happy. What I need to know is, would it be okay to mix 25 -one inch peacocks with a red jewel(about same size) in a 40 breeder?

Sure, but they won't stay 1 inch so while it may work initially, success will be fleeting.
