indeed a lovely looking young man.

when you set up a new tank, hide an extra
sponge or two behind some decor, that way you have
something seeded for you next filter.

Very very simple to make and costs you next to nothing.

It is a 1" pvc overflow I use for my sump.

About the only thing you need that you cannot get at the local hardware store is an air line check valve and a small piece of tubing.

With that design, it will always re-prime itself once the power goes out, only thing you need to remember is to make a siphon break hole in the return line.
It will not be needed if you have the return line above the water line, as once the water goes below the overflow it is impossible to create anymore siphon.
The vent hole in the top is also important,
I can PM you the link to where I got my design from if you want.
