Cichlid lip problem?

I am fairly new to aquariums, so please excuse my limited knowledge. I have a South African Cichlid and recently his bottom lip has become abnormal looking. Its lower lip at first became almost swollen. Now it looks mis-shapen as if injured or possibly cut. What do ya'll think it is, and how should I treat it? Any help would be appreciated.

Cichlids will often lip lock when fighting over territory or during spawning so he may have injured it. Does it look like it's infected? Is he eating ok? Extra water changes to keep the water clean may help but you may need to medicate with an antibacterial. Do you have a pic you can post of his lip?
