Yellow Labs, relatively peaceful species, easy to breed, breed at as early as 6 months of age, look great as a species tank. Giraffe Hap, peaceful species, will grow relatively large and will keep broods from other fishes at a minimum. Sunshine peacock, beautiful fish, peacful nature. theres a few to start off with

SK Austin, Did I read that right?

Steve, you wrote a great reply regarding starting cichlids. You advised overstocking the tank (it was a 55 gallon) and advised 20 fish in that post? That seems like a lot. I have a 55g and right now have only 5 mumba in it and two plecs. Should I get more fish? I would love to but worry about being overstocked. Thanks for your help. Deefish

The number of Africans you can keep in a 55gal greatly depends on the species you have in there. For example, you can easily keep 30 demasoni in a tank of that size, but I wouldn't recommend more than 4 or 5 M. estherae (Red Zebra) for the same setup.

Also, on a side note, someone suggested a "Giraffe Hap". This is the common/trade name for N. venustus, and will get much too large for a 55gal tank.
