Many unscupulous fish suppliers use hormones to enhance a fish's colors. The turquoise severum is absolutely gorgeous in breeding trim. Down side, they are really bland otherwise.

any idea if the fish you bought was alone in the tank in the shop or if it was with females, males ....

most of the time if you have a couple colors of the male and female is 10 times enhanced.

about the hormones that could be true. What is the price of the fish, to see if it is worth for the seller to use expensive hormones to feed them!!!!

last thought.... is their a huge diffference in between your lights and the ones in the store that could explain the difference ???

I would try to buy the other one to see if it is that.

at the same time you can ask the owner of the shop what he thinks about that.

The use of hormones does not make any difference in the demands and prices of the fish but it does make a difference in their lifestyle like higher vulnerability to diseases and reduced lifespan. They will not usually tell you the fish has been fed with food laced with hormones but do ask your LFS for their sources. It must be noted that a lot of fish farms in Asia feed their fish with foods laced with hormones. I live in Asia myself and I had been swamped with complaints about this hormone regimen by my lfs before.
