Cool Can Pink Convicts and Yellow Labs breed together?

I have a yellow lab carrying eggs. the only possible male is a pink convict or a texas. i dont think the texas could be the father because they grow to be 10 - 12" and the labs only grow to 3". the texas and the pink are about the same size.

By "carrying eggs" do you mean in her mouth? If she is and hasnt been around any other fish in the last couple weeks, the eggs are surely infertile. I think the chances of one of your american cichlids breeding with a yellow lab cichlid is about the same as one of them breeding with a yellow lab retriever.

Fish carry them around before they are fertilized...
like Syrinx said; I would highly doubt it if they breed together. Would be interesting though!

Some South american cichlids do it that way,but most africans fertilize the eggs in the female's mouth. These species have "egg spots" on the anal fin of the male. The female tries to pick them up like they were more eggs and instead gets a mouthful of sperm.

I dont know how unusual it is for them to lay and pick up eggs with no male present, I have never kept African cichlids. But I have heard of American cichlids trying to spawn with 2 females when no males are present. One lays the eggs, the other acts as if she is fertilizing them, but of course she cant. The need to breed can be strong in some fish.

It may be that they sometimes carry eggs around looking for a male, I dont know enough about them to say for sure.
