It really depends on the species of cichlid you're looking at. Some breed quite readily whereas other are extremely difficult.

If I might recommend a starting point for breeding, Start with a fish that will be a prolific breeder, fast grower, and will be easy to get rid of. Personally, If youre looking at African Cichlids, I'd recommend statring with Labidochromis caeruleus, which fit the bill perfectly, and are a relatively peaceful fish. The trick is to then to find a pair to mate. Best of luck.

I had Africans for like eight months or so before they started breeding. It seemed like the second I put them in a tank with sand they just started to reproduce like crazy. Now I am taking batches of them down to the fish store and getting credit for them.

The big challenge I find is sexing the fish before you buy them. Usually the people a the LFS around here have little to no idea about what sex the fish are. That combined with my improvable knowledge of cichlid sexes has equaled many same-sex pairs in my tank.

Just be careful that you are not setting up a war zone in there. You don't want all your male cichlids to have a brawl all the time...

Good Luck!
