Are the eyes looking largely disproportionate to its body size? That's your clue to stunted growth. Pictures however will help. What you are seeing is a Pterophyllum scalare. Scalares have long been bred to produce several strains. Pterophyllum altum has not been bred so far despite the claims by some people which just turn out to be Peruvian scalares rather than the actual altum.
