They say 1 discus needs approx. 10-12 gallons. Depending on planting, decorations and other fish in your 55 gal. I currently have a 65 gal and only house 4 discus along with 1 pearl gourami, 3 chocalate gouramis, 2 threadfin rainbow and few corycats (which all are fairly small max size of 1"-2.5" except the pearl gourami, he's at 3"-4"). Which last night I noticed 1 of my discus isn't doing very well. The more dominant ones doesn't seem to be letting him/her eat. They were fine in the beginning but now that they have grown, you can see who the dominant ones are. Have to keep an eye on it. In my option, 5 in a 55gal is a tad too much.
