Salvinis might also work. Don't expect to have anything else in the tank with them that will survive, though.

Although not American, the West African riverine cichlids are pretty similar to their American cousins. The different types of kribensis are similar to the American dwarf cichlids, and jewel cichlids can be treated like miniature Jack Dempseys (with an even worse attitude, I'd say).
