37 gallon cichlids tank?

I have a 37 gallon tank (tall)that I used to use to keep tropical community fish in. I was considering getting som cichlids for the tank but am unsure what should/can get. Since I have never had cichlids before I don't know what species to look at given my tank. If my tank is not suitable for any cichlids I understand and will look into another setup for my tank.

Also I am looking to get a canister filter for the tank and would like opinions on proper sizing. (I can't use HOB filters due to the location of my tank)

Any help would be grateful, thank you.

Hooray Fish!

A single firemouth would be nice, IF you have a fairly large tank footprint. A tall is not ideal. You can't have anything over six inches in that tank I'd say. If you have a smaller tank footprint you could try dwarf cichlids e.g. rams and kribensis, but you still need a tank foot print at least 2ftx12in as a bare minimum for dwarfs. If you really want cichlids, then know that with them tank footprint is far more important than depth, as they are quite active and generally hang lower in the water column. cheers, Jim

If your tank is big enough, than discus are pretty and fairly peaceful cichlids that aren't quite as active as most.

Discus are not appropriate for a 37 gallon tank, which has the same footprint as a 29.

I would say go for Dwarf cichlids like Rams, Apistogrammas, theirs some nice different variety's of both types and the bonus with them is their not aggressive so you could always have the option to add other types of fish. Were as with some cichlids like Malawi your kinda stuck to keeping the same fish only.

the dimensions of my tank are 30"x12" and 23" tall. is that big enough for Dwarf cichlids? or is it too small, i do not want to end up with fish that will suffer due to having too small of a tank. I think cichlids look amazing but i am willing to get other fish that are more suited to my tank size.

my first tank was 10g and i was sold a plecostomus by someone who had no idea what they were, i found out later and do not want to make that mistake again.

Hooray Fish!

Yes it's a good size tank for dwarf cichlids.
