30 gal african suggestions?

hey everybody! i've kept south american cichlids for about 5 years now and i might want to try to start an african tank. i have a 30gal that i would put the fish in. i know that i would want a high pH and rocks(that could help with the pH). my main concern is stocking the tank right now.

i don't know which species would be cool and fit in my tank. i really like pretty fish that will swim up to meet me. i went to petsmart today and here is a list of some of the ones that i saw that i liked:

Venustus (giraffe)
Ice blue zebra cichlid
Bumble Bee
prange blotch peacock
Electric blue cichlid

i don't know which if any of these would work in a 30 gal or what kind of cichlids they would work with but i would love to.

also if anybody has any other suggestions i would really appreciate it!!!

Hi RLham3, I am in the same boat as you right now but I do know that you can't keep venustus in that small of tank, they are the main reason I bought a 90 gallon today as they grow large! They are really great fish with loads of personality, when I kept a pair 5 years ago they grew to be 8" in a 55gallon tank that why I went so much bigger this time. i wish I could help you more!

I agree...a 30g is too small for those fish, and it will be difficult to find a good mix of fish in that tank without facing aggression issues. I wouldn't try to do a mbuna tank in a tank smaller than 75g. You could probably get some Lake Tanganyika fish in that size tank though, especially the smaller shelldwellers. They're smaller fish and tend to be less aggressive than the Lake Malawi fish, so you're less likely to have severe aggression issues even if you aren't ideally stocked.
