I started a new thread because the old one didn't get replies on my 2nd question. I have 3 Neons. I have seen the males nip my male Betta. I wont be getting any new fish until January. Would the female be okay by herself if I took the males out of the tank? Or should I rehome them all?
I should also mention that the woman I would give them too is not the best fishkeeper and her fish don't live their full lifespan. Posted via Mobile Device
Not sure which fish you are talking about separating (female you reference). I would separate the betta from the other fish as the Bettas will do fine on there own. I would not separate the neons from each other.
What I'm saying is that I want to remove the Neons. The males are getting agressive, but the female seems to no be. The males nip the female, each other, my Betta, and sometimes my snail! I have 2 options. I can give them to the woman I mentioned or put them in a floating quart jar in my tank until I can get to PetSmart in January. I need to know if the female will be okay on her own or not and if she will resort to fin nipping and agression if I take out the males.
Also, moving my Betta is not an option. I am only allowed one tank which is my 10gal, Besides, I wouldn't move him to a smaller one and give his bullies free reign of my 10gal which I could put nothing else I want in because they would clash with it. Posted via Mobile Device
I would leave the neons in the tank and move the betta into the floating quart container. The neon(s) will not do well in the other container.
I think the reason you are having an issue with the neons is that you only have 3 of them. My school doesnt nip. I believe this is because there are 9 of them and the hierarchy amongst them has already been establish. Any nipping is minimized due to the size of the school; reduces dominate fish from picking on the same fish.
If you were to remove the Neon, I would think that once the male(s) are removed the female would become the dominate fish and the nipping would continue. Also, you would have to be able to sex the neons which can be difficult when they are not ripe with eggs.
... I have never kept a Betta with other fish. I have read so many issues with Bettas in a community tank. I would advise against it. Their large fins are just ripe for the nipping.
I thought about getting a larger school in January, but these guys were an impulse buy and as much trouble as I've had with tetras, I want them out. I already removed the one that killed all my shrimp! It was terrible and my poor little Betta and one survivng shrimp hid for days. One also killed my Julii, but I didn't witness it. It could have been the remaining Neons for all I know. They have just been a nightmare since I added them.
And I like my Betta. He's a sweetheart. And he works with the mix I want which is shrimp and Cory Cats. I was stupid to try something different and now I'm paying for it. Posted via Mobile Device
when I had bettas they all got along well with inhabbitants that I had 5-giant danios 9-common guppies (often from lack of color and beauty are sold and labled feeders) 7-betta in all 1 male 6 female (for some reason no territories) 1 commen pleco 2 red-finned sharks also known from conclusion rainbow sharks ( still no established territory) all would co-exiest couple commen aqiurum snails (unknown species) so my concluson is the neons bettas and red-fins are both territorial fish so I am guessing again from compatibility standards either increase neon- school number at own risk-( small under established schools result in agression) or get rid of the neons since you are only allowed 1 tank. hope this helps I feal sorry if you have to get rid of any more tank inhabitants
Also, the Neons pick on everything on the tank, so just jaring the Betta would not solve the problem. I would have to float my inverts too. Posted via Mobile Device

hmm.. yes I remember you saying that, that is also what I said about inhabitant or did I say that anyways same advice as before since small under established schools = agresson still hope it helps
Yeah, I did think about the bigger school, but not sure if I want to risk it. And I couldn't have shrimp because the Neons would kill/eat them. And it is a 10 gal, so limited on how big a school I could do. I'm bumed about getting rid of them, but the more I think about it, the more I realize that it's my best option. What have I learned? Impulse Buy = Bad Idea! Posted via Mobile Device
Neons do nip in small numbers, your Betta is a solitary fish and is happiest on his own, I normally advise more than 10 neons in a school, so its up to you to either get some more neons or give the tank over to the Betta, the Betta swims far too slowly to avoid these fast neons,,soon he will stress causing more problems.
I'm getting rid of the Neons and going with Gus, some shrimp, 4 or 5 Cory Cats, and 2 mystery snails. I don't know that getting more Neons will fix the problem and even if they quit picking on Gus, they would still kill my shrimp. It's not a question of rather or not I'm getting rid of them, but how to do it. They can be given away to the woman I mentioned or isolated for 3 weeks and given back to the pet store when I can drive up there. Posted via Mobile Device

I ended up getting very lucky and running into a woman in WalMart who is a fishkeeper too! We started talking and she told me she was doing a species tank for her grandaughter and was going to get her a bunch of Neons! I told her I had 3 to rehome and she gladly took them. They are all fishkeepers, so the little ones will have a good home :-D Posted via Mobile Device

that is amazing no waiting in a store with worrying about travel sickness or at the store without being cared for (I know this because a petstore some years ago was shut down for that reason:evil
