I think the problem is that the fish dont get along. Like humans, some fish just hate others so that might be it. I think you should consider giving away the fish that doesnt get along.

I have a male crowntail betta and 5 neon tetra in a 10 gallon tank. They seem to be doing fine.

To minimize fighting you need to have many tetras. I know people say that you have to have three at the least., but they are wrong. You need at least 8 and keep it an even number regardless of the junk you read online. My theory has been tested. If one becomes dominant in an even numbered group, it is more likely that the others will not follow. So basically, the 'dominant one" is left alone while the others do their stuff. (I have tested this 3 times. It worked 3 times)

Can you please explain your testing methods..What size tank did you do your testing in ?.......Your 5 gallon tank?.....Did you test your theory in a tank around 55 gallons?...So what would happen if you took out the dominant tetra?......He will be replaced by another member of the shoal.....And just a little side note, FISH cannot count!!.........Any number over 5 is a good size shoal for ANY tetra....The larger the better, though.............

A little off topic, but I'm pretty sure the fish in Blaxican's profile are spotted gar. Cool fish for sure.

I've read the "number rule" in many different places, but the thing is, just as many sources tend to tell you that you must keep even numbers of fish as those that say odd numbers are mandatory. I'm inclined to believe that it's all just superstition.

I believe that whether the number is even or odd is irrelevant but the quantity is. I think they may be spotted gar. All I know is that i was doing a porject for school and I came across a page on wikipedia of Mexico and it showed this pic of the fish. I wonder what they taste like? 0_0

I've wondered what type of fish those were since I first spotted them as Blax's avatar. I'm not sure why I waited for someone else to ask and answer??

Just to add something else to the mix as far as the odd/even factor. Pictus catfish, as an example, will fight over territory when kept as a pair. As adults they can become very grumpy. Keeping one pictus will assure no bickering over real estate. When kept as a trio (or more) you'll avoid having a bully who is constantly harrassing a particular individual; the aggression will be spread out. This is the type of situation where I would say numbers count, odd vs even. (This advice was given to me by an experienced fishkeeper) when I was first setting up my tank and I'm glad he did!) Of course, we are talking about schooling fish, and not catfish. I just couldn't resist pointing out that odd/even counts when we are discussing one versus three or two.

good point. But say that perhaps a fourth catfish was added. Would fish count-thinking that being even means more peace? or is it merely just the adding of another deviation of aggresion. What if it were 5 or 7? then 8? whether schooling fish or not.
