How many neons would u put in a 58 g ?

I am going to set up a 58 gallon tank with just neon tetras. Using the formulas for how many I can keep in my tank (tank volume, surface area/inches and weight of fish) I end up with wildy different answers, between 15 and 100 fish!!

The tank is 58 g. (about 40 by 22 by 16 inches,not exact)

How many you think?

With good filtration you will easily keep 100 as they are so sml, Its only when you start adding other fish you will have to make some changes to the stocking level

I might put in a school of cories to help clean the bottom of the tank (and I like them) but I pretty much just want neons, or prehaps cardinals. I think they look great schooling in large numbers.

Maybe 60 neons and 10 cories?

Thanks, do you think neons or cardinals would be better? I think cardinals are prettier but they are anot quite so hardy from what I read. Any personal experience?

Welcome.

I find it a bluff that cardinals are not hardy once acclimated. But transportation probably is. However, I have no problems whatsoever even with transporting my cardinals. They're very hardy in my experience.:)

Start yourself up with 40 neons and 10 pygmy cories and 5 ottos. Work up to 60/30/10. Lilliput! I have a 20 gallon on this very scheme.

of course, cycle before you get the neons as they wont be able to take the rigors of cycling :)
